The GR86 puts out 228 hp so in terms of power it is the better of the two, though the Toyota is a fixed-roof coupe and there is no convertible option to be had.

That is the case across the entire lineup. Take the 2026 Subaru BRZ for instance, with an asking price of $35,860^* it is more costly than the $35,730^* Grand Touring, the top offering from the MX-5. You will find the tS version of the BRZ at $38,360^*. The two are further distinguished by their fuel economy, on a like for like rear-drive platform the MX-5 will put up 29 mpg combined to the 22 of the BRZ, seven mpg in all.
