The exterior design of the Mazda CX-90 is smooth, sleek, and bold, and according to Mazda, is meant to play with the natural elements of light and shadow. The CX-90 is available in eight different trim levels, from the standard Turbo Select up to the luxurious Turbo S Premium Plus. The standard model features LED headlights and taillights with high beam control, as well as heated side mirrors with integrated LED turn signals. While the basic trim has a black honeycomb front grille and black trim, higher trims include gloss black or body-colored trim, depending on your preference.

Other features included as standard are rear privacy glass, a power liftgate, a roof spoiler and rails, and an all-wheel drive (AWD) badge, with options to upgrade to include features such as a power sliding panoramic moonroof or a shark fin antenna. Aside from the base color choices of Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, Platinum Quartz Metallic, and Sonic Silver Metallic, there are also several premium colors to choose from — Rhodium White Premium, Machine Gray Metallic, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, and the shifting new shade, Artisan Red Premium.

Power and Performance

The standard version of the 2024 CX-90 has a 3.3L inline-six turbo engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that offers 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, and its higher-performing sibling, a 3.3 turbo engine, is the most powerful engine Mazda has ever had, offering 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a plug-in hybrid variant, with an inline four-cylinder engine and a 17.8 kWh battery pack, which gets 323 horsepower.

Rear-based i-Activ AWD is standard for the CX-90, and while the combustion engine gets up to 24 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, the hybrid variant is even more efficient, getting up to 26 miles of electric driving per charge. The CX-90 also features Mi-Drive, which allows you to switch between four driving modes to optimize performance: normal, sport, off-road, and towing. In addition, this vehicle can tow up to 5,000 pounds and features kinematic posture control for improved stability.

Interior Design, Comfort, and Convenience

The interior of the CX-90 is roomy with a high-end feel, with the capacity to seat eight. You can choose between a bench seat or captain’s chairs for the second row. Depending on your choice of trim, the CX-90 features luxurious details such as kakenui stitching, leather-trimmed seats, and a fabric-upholstered dashboard. Larger than the CX-9, there’s plenty of storage and cargo space, with storage pockets in the doors and underfloor storage in the rear cargo space.

If you’re looking for extra customization, the more premium trim levels include additional high-tech features, such as an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless phone charger, six USB ports, a 12-speaker surround sound audio system, and second-row retractable window shades.

Infotainment and Safety Features

The CX-90 offers plenty of safety and security features, such as dual front, front side-impact, and knee airbags, as well as side-impact air curtains in case of a rollover. Dynamic stability control is included standard, as is a traction control system, trailer stability assist, a rearview monitor, roll stability control, hill launch assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and radar cruise control. Premium trim levels include front and rear parking sensors, auto speed limit assist, cruising and traffic support, and a 360-degree view monitor for ultimate visibility.

In terms of infotainment, the CX-90 features a 10.25-inch display standard with multifunction commander control and voice command, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. In addition to the 12-speaker surround sound Bose audio system, wireless phone charger, and USB ports mentioned previously, more premium trim levels include features such as the larger 12.3-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital LCD meter display, and an active driving display with traffic sign recognition.
