Maintenance Schedule of the Mazda CX-50

August 31st, 2023 by

The Mazda CX-50 crossover SUV looks similar to a larger version of the CX-5. It’s also versatile, attractive, and fun to drive around Orange, California. To keep your CX-50 in excellent shape and extend its life span, it’s a good idea to follow a regular maintenance schedule. Here’s more information about the maintenance your vehicle needs and when you should have a professional check your SUV.

Maintaining Your CX-50 in Normal Conditions

When you mostly drive your CX-50 on highways and other roads, and you rarely go on long trips or tow heavy loads, follow Mazda’s Normal Driving Scheduled Maintenance intervals. Here’s the schedule you should follow for normal driving.

Every 5,000 Miles or Six Months

Bring your CX-50 to our service center for routine maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. Several maintenance tasks are necessary, including:

  • Replacing the engine oil and oil filter.
  • Inspecting the washer, brake, and clutch fluid levels.
  • Looking for brake wear.
  • Checking coolant levels.
  • Inspecting the engine air filter and drive belts.
  • Inspecting the interior and exterior lights.
  • Checking the tire pressure and wear levels, including the spare tire.
  • Lubricating locks and hinges.

Choose synthetic oil and change it at least twice per year. Even if you don’t drive your CX-50 often, the oil will break down and lose its effectiveness over time.

Every 10,000 Miles or 12 Months

Every year or 10,000 miles, repeat the tasks listed above. You’ll also need to check your vehicle’s wheel alignment, fuel lines, and hoses. Get technicians to rotate your tires to prevent excess wear and help them last as long as possible. Even if it takes longer than a year, you can usually wait until you’ve driven 10,000 miles for a tire rotation. However, inspecting them every six months is a good idea.

Every 20,000 Miles or 24 Months

When two years pass, repeat the six-month or 5,000-mile maintenance schedule. Also, you should tighten the nuts and bolts on the chassis and body to minimize engine noise and vibrations. You should inspect some additional parts as well, including:

  • Brake lines, connections, and hoses.
  • Fuel lines and hoses.
  • Power steering operation and parts.
  • Driveshaft dust boots, heat shields, and other parts of the exhaust system.
  • Front and rear suspension components, ball joints, and wheel bearings.

Every 30,000 Miles or 24 Months

Replace the cabin air filter to improve the air quality. This can also prevent problems with your CX-50’s heater and air conditioner and help you save fuel by increasing climate system efficiency.

Every 40,000 Miles or 24 Months

When your vehicle reaches 40,000 miles or 24 months pass, repeat the maintenance tasks listed for 5,000 miles and 20,000 miles. If you have a manual transmission, replace its oil. Also, check your CX-50’s drive belts.

Every 75,000 Miles

When your vehicle reaches 75,000 miles, replacing the spark plug can help prevent future breakdowns. A spark plug creates a spark that ignites combustion, and it’s essential for starting your engine. It’s also a good idea to replace the cabin air filter.

Every 120,000 Miles or 10 Years

After 120,000 miles or 10 years, replace the engine coolant. Before that, check the coolant levels and add more if needed. Continue taking care of other regular maintenance tasks every 5,000 miles and at other intervals. After your vehicle reaches 120,000 miles or its 10th birthday, replace the engine coolant every 60,000 miles or five years.

When To Add Maintenance Tasks to Your Schedule

If you drive in harsh conditions, you may need to maintain your CX-50 more often. Vehicles often require more maintenance when they idle in traffic frequently, drive for long periods at low speeds, or only drive short distances. If you commute in heavy traffic or avoid the highway, you’ll probably drive like this. Driving in dusty or sandy conditions, mountainous regions, or hot or cold temperatures can also lead to additional problems.

If your SUV needs maintenance that’s not on the regular schedule, you’ll probably notice a light on your dashboard. Here are some of the lights you might see.

General Maintenance Light

If the general maintenance light on your CX-50 comes on, have a mechanic check everything. This light on the driver instrument panel looks like a small wrench, and it activates when the vehicle’s computer system detects a part that’s not functioning properly. With some models, a message displays on the instrument panel at the same time.

Battery or Alternator Light

A red battery with plus and minus symbols means there could be a problem with your alternator. If this lights up, drive to our service center immediately. If you stop somewhere else, the alternator may not be powerful enough to charge your battery and restart your vehicle. However, pull over immediately if you notice dim lights or other problems with the electronics in your CX-50.

Oil Light

A red oil light indicates low oil pressure. Avoid driving until you replenish the oil, and have a professional check it as soon as possible. You could have an oil leak or an engine that’s operating at high temperatures and burning excess oil.

Temperature Light

A red thermometer with three bars to its right means your CX-50’s engine coolant is too hot. Pull over to let the engine cool off, and have a technician inspect your vehicle as soon as you can.

ABS Light

An orange ABS light indicates a malfunction with the ABS. Your brakes will still work, but the wheels will lock during an accident. This means you can’t press the brake and steer to avoid an obstacle simultaneously. A professional can inspect your vehicle and help you restore this safety feature.
