Mazda CX-9 Maintenance Schedule

The Mazda CX-9 ranks among the best three-row crossovers in today’s market, so it’s only natural if you feel drawn to it and want to experience the SUV’s impressive features and capabilities. If you’re thinking about purchasing a CX-9 or if you already have, we’ve put together a maintenance schedule guide that will help you extend the life of your car.

Types of Schedules Available

To make this guide as helpful as possible, we’ve divided the recommended maintenance visits into two: schedule one, for those who drive on roads in good conditions, and schedule two, for those who drive on irregular roads. For each schedule, you’ll bring your car in based on one of two metrics. The first metric is time-dependent, while the other is mileage-dependent — use whichever comes first when scheduling your routine vehicle maintenance.

Most people follow schedule one. This schedule is designed for people who drive under normal to moderate conditions, while schedule two is for those who drive under extreme conditions. Depending on your everyday driving conditions, you may follow one or the other, and you can always adjust if your driving conditions change over time.

We’ve described below what you can expect from each visit so that you’ll have an easier time identifying the type of maintenance schedule your Mazda CX-9 needs.

Schedule 1 Interval

If the roads you drive on are in good condition and the weather can be classified as normal (sunny to moderately rainy), then you’ll likely use schedule one.

Every 12 months or 7,500 miles, you’ll have to take your CX-9 in for servicing and let the technicians rotate tires, replace the engine oil and filters, and check your brakes and the emergency flat tire kit if installed. Some Mazda CX-9s use the Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance setting, which indicates when you need to change the SUV’s oil by illuminating a wrench indicator light.

Every 24 months or 15,000 miles, in addition to the above tasks, service technicians will also repair your CX-9’s chassis and body (if needed) and replace the cabin air filter. In addition, they will inspect fuel and brake lines, steering operation and linkages, the driveshaft dust boots, the suspension, wheel bearing axial play, and ball joints.

Every 36 months or 22,500 miles, along with the standard check-in, service technicians will replace the cabin’s air filter again and inspect the drive belts.

Every 48 months or 30,000 miles, your Mazda CX-9 will receive the same maintenance as the 24-month/15,000-mile interval, along with an inspection of the hoses and emission tubes.

Every 60 months or 37,500 miles, service technicians will inspect the exhaust system and heat shields.

Beyond this maintenance schedule, you should follow the same service intervals during the rest of your SUV’s lifetime. For example, if your vehicle just hit 60,000 miles, the right interval to follow is the 48-month/30,000-mile maintenance interval.

Also, note that your vehicle’s spark plugs should be changed at 40,000 miles. Once it hits the 10-year or 120,000-mile mark, the engine coolant should be replaced as well, and then again every 60,000 miles or five years.

Schedule 2 Interval

If your everyday driving conditions involve more wear and tear to your Mazda CX-9’s engine, then you should follow schedule two. Severe driving conditions include driving across rough terrain with corrosive materials like salt, driving short distances daily, and driving in extreme weather conditions like snow, fog, pouring rain, and ice.

Every six months or 5,000 miles, the vehicle’s oil must be changed — although, if you expose your vehicle to extreme weather conditions daily, it is recommended to change it even sooner. If you use the Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance setting, the wrench light will indicate when your Mazda CX-9 is due for an oil change. Additionally, technicians should rotate your tires and lubricate all the car’s locks and hinges. They will also inspect the disc brakes, tire pressure, light functionality, engine coolant, clutch, and brake fluid levels.

In addition to the above tasks, every 12 months or 10,000 miles, technicians will check the emergency flat tire kit, if it’s installed.

Every 18 months or 15,000 miles, technicians will check and repair anything broken on your SUV’s chassis and body and inspect fuel and brake lines, the driveshaft dust boots, steering operation and linkage, and the front and rear suspension.

Every 24 months or 20,000 miles, along with the standard check-in, technicians will replace the cabin’s air filter and check the drive belts.

Every 36 months or 30,000 miles, the Mazda CX-9 will receive the same maintenance as the 18-month/15,000-mile interval, as well as an air filter replacement and a hose and tube inspection.

Every 42 months or 35,000 miles, technicians will inspect the exhaust system and heat shields.

After your Mazda has reached the mentioned milestones, you should follow the same maintenance intervals for the rest of the SUV’s lifetime. For example, if your Mazda just hit the 72-month or 60,000-mile mark, it will receive the same maintenance as the 36-month or 30,000-mile interval.

As in schedule one, once the CX-9 hits 40,000 miles, you should schedule a maintenance visit to have its spark plugs changed. Also, after the 10-year or 120,000-mile mark, the engine coolant should be replaced. You can repeat this after that time every five years or 60,000 miles.
